2/01/92 New Back-UPS Uninterruptible Power Supplies protect LAN nodes and inter-networking equipment at $169 list APC has released a new Back-UPS family of cost-effective Uninterruptible Power Sources for LANs and other mission-critical applications at list prices starting at $169 for a 250 Volt-Amp unit (suitable for LAN nodes, 386SX, and 286 systems). The new Back-UPS systems offer the most cost-effective solution to power problems that can cause data loss and hardware damage. The new Back-UPS 400 offers the industry's best price/performance ratio, at just $0.62 per Volt-Amp. In addition to multi-stage surge suppression and EMI/RFI filtering, Back-UPS typically provide 15-20 minutes of computer-grade power during a blackout or brownout. This allows the user to work through brief power outages without interruption or data loss. During extended power outages, Back-UPS allow the user to finish the application and safely log off. Most Back-UPS offer an additional level of network fault tolerance by initiating an automatic, unattended server shutdown during an extended outage. This UPS signaling dramatically increases LAN reliability and is supported by all major operating systems, including Novell, Unix, LAN Manager, LAN Server, LANtastic, Banyan and others. The new products are available in 250, 400, 450 and 600VA size as well as the previously announced Back-UPS 800 and 1200. The Back-UPS 250 is ideal protection for 386SX, 286, XT and AT computers, and also inter-networking hardware such as routers, bridges, gateways and hubs. The Back-UPS 400 is sized for desktop 386 and 486 systems, while the Back-UPS 450 provides extra power for tower 386 and 486 systems. The Back-UPS 600 has additional capacity for heavily configured file servers or two 386 systems. New features include rear panel option switches that allow the user to change the low voltage transfer setting, disable the audible alarm, and change the low battery warning setting. A rear panel site wiring fault indicator allows users to diagnose reversed polarity, open ground, and other wiring problems which previously required an electrician to diagnose. All Back-UPS systems offer a two-year warranty and are available immediately. The list prices for the Back-UPS 250, 400, 450 and 600 are $169, $249, $329 and $449 respectively. -------------------------------------------------------- 2/01/92 American Power Conversion announces SurgeArrest network-grade surge protection American Power Conversion has announced a significant line of surge suppression products for network hardware and other critical applications. The SurgeArrest(TM) line is comprised of five separate units; SurgeArrest for sensitive electronic and office equipment such as copiers and fax machines; SurgeArrest PLUS for network nodes and interlan hardware; SurgeArrest PLUS with telephone line protection for servers and data communications equipment. Two wall-mount versions of SurgeArrest PLUS and SurgeArrest PLUS with tel round out the new family. "There has been quite a marketing battle in this category," said Lloyd Kinnear, APC Product Manager," and the truth is certain technologies do in fact handle certain transient problems better than others. So we've created a multi-stage protector which incorporates both shunt and series elements. These include multiple MOVs, capacitors, inductors, resistors and fuses...all the elements necessary to handle all types of transients." In addition, the units feature superior common and normal mode noise attenuation. Noise is a major problem on many networks, particularly multi-user systems employing RS-232 cables. In addition, most units offer seven outlets, one more than the industry standard, so that more equipment can benefit from protection. Intelligent diagnostics include a site-wiring fault indicator to detect reversed polarity or poor ground and a "Protection working" LED to notify user-Q of ongoing coverage. "There are certain power problems that no surge protector or UPS will be able to solve. The SurgeArrest Series is smart enough to recognize these situations and advise you to get an electrician in to fix the problem," said Kinnear. SurgeArrest is currently shipping. List prices range from $29 to $99. At less than one-fifth the cost of competitive high-end suppressors, SurgeArrest units are the most cost-effective suppressors currently on the market to receive the highest UL 1449 rating for surge protection across hot, neutral and ground lines. "This is an important strategic product for Lloyd Kinnear. "Resellers typically like to use one source for power protection equipment. With the introduction of SurgeArrest, APC can offer a comprehensive solution from surge protection to UPS systems, to advanced network power management software." -------------------------------------------------------- American Power Conversion is the market share leader in Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) and software for networks and similar mission-critical applications.
